This model of vase has three possible or various names at the Sèvres porcelain manufactory's 18th century records as shown by Sir Geoffrey de Bellaigue; the vase à médallion de Mercure, or the vase ovale de Mercure or the pot-pourri Mercure.
This example is the most elaborate of six known examples of this shape as it is the only one with an architectural stem section at the base. There are two in the British Royal Collection; a pair in the Walters Art Gallery, Baltimore; one in a private collection in London.
