Overview
“I feel we live in an age where we are crying out for a sense of wonder. In my Sussex studio, I reimagine historical decorative techniques which combine ancient and modern materials, illuminating the intricate enchantments of the natural world around me.”
As the daughter of a cabinetmaker, Sophie Coryndon grew up surrounded by exotic materials and exceptional craftsmanship. These formative experiences played an important role in her development as she established herself as an artist whose work is characterised by an innate fascination for an array of techniques, which she now combines to create intricate reliefs and installations.
Her work happily defies categorisation, spanning the worlds of fine and decorative art and design, whilst employing multiple craft-based techniques. Coryndon believes it is through the active blending of skills and practices that alchemic magic occurs.
Her foundation derives from a rich tapestry of inspiration; illuminated manuscripts, Renaissance altarpieces, techniques from haute couture, fairytales, and magical realism. Then, ‘stitched’ slowly into each piece, is an exploration of time and beauty, a quest for wonder and a calling to reenchant the viewer whilst shining a light on (illuminating in gold) what we have, and what we can lose.
